Navigating Complex Challenges with Passion and Precision

Stuart Manzie recently joined STRUXIT in KwaZulu-Natal as Industrial Lead, bringing with him a wealth of experience in, among others, process-driven industrial projects. Here, we find out more about Stuart’s approach.

I joined STRUXIT at the beginning of this year after spending 14 years at a Large Multinational Firm. Prior to that, I had the opportunity to work in the UK, gaining exposure to different work environments and approaches to engineering. My experience spans various sectors, but my true passion lies in process-driven industrial projects.

There’s something uniquely satisfying about understanding how products are made and moved, and how equipment is used in complex environments. I thrive on the challenges these projects present, particularly when they involve brownfield sites or phased construction where maintaining a safe and dust-free environment is crucial.

At STRUXIT, my role extends beyond just engineering. I lead multidisciplinary projects where we serve as principal agents, forming professional teams to deliver on our clients’ needs. My approach to this work is a holistic one. I’m deeply involved in overall project planning and timing, ensuring that everything from equipment procurement to construction sequencing is meticulously managed. My goal is always to optimise resource use and ensure that the project is delivered safely, on time and within budget.

Getting involved in a project as early as possible makes a difference to the end result. When we are brought in at the initial stages, we can help clients develop a solid business plan that considers all the factors – land suitability, costs, timelines, logistics, and safety. This early involvement allows us to contribute meaningfully to the project’s success, helping to avoid issues that might arise later due to unforeseen constraints or rushed decisions.

However, it’s not always possible to be involved from the start, and that’s when my experience and ability to innovate around time and scheduling really come into play. Time is often the biggest constraint we face, and I’ve learned that innovation in our field is not just about new software or design tools. It’s about creative planning, establishing optimal workstreams, and maintaining open and transparent communication with everyone involved. It’s about finding ways to overlap workstreams, identify risks early, and work around them efficiently.

Currently, I’m leading a project that’s a testament to the kind of work I’m passionate about. We’re building a press shop and assembly facility for a foreign press manufacture supplying pressed parts to Toyota in South Africa. This project is a direct result of government incentives to encourage local manufacturing, which is something I believe is crucial for our country’s economic growth. The site is in the Dube TradePort, close to the airport, which presents its own set of challenges. These include managing vibrations from heavy presses and complying with strict air traffic control regulations. It’s complex, but it’s the kind of project where STRUXIT’s multidisciplinary approach can make a significant difference.

Mentoring is another aspect of my work that I find incredibly rewarding. The Durban team is young, passionate, and eager to learn, and I love being able to share my knowledge and experience with them. But mentoring is not a one-way street. I learn from the younger engineers just as much as they learn from me. It’s a dynamic exchange that keeps me energised and constantly growing in my own role.

I often tell my team that all your knowledge should be transferred before you retire. We owe it to the industry to ensure that the next generation of engineers is equipped with the skills and insights they need to succeed. This is especially important in South Africa, where we’ve seen a significant loss of experienced professionals due to emigration. We can’t afford to let that knowledge gap widen.

As I look ahead, I’m excited about the future at STRUXIT. We have a healthy work culture where everyone is encouraged to grow, learn, and enjoy what they do. We work hard, but we also have fun, and that’s what makes STRUXIT a special place to be. I’m proud to be part of a team that shares my passion for delivering quality projects and for mentoring the next generation of engineers.
